Rumor has it that Lion Dr. Ron "Tex" McNutt was bitten by a rattlesnake! According to Lion Dave, Lion Ron was out hiking out in Arizona when he was bitten. He is doing good, and hopefully will tell us the story first hand when he gets back. (I wonder if the snake is now a pair of shoes).

Lion Dean reported on White Cane Day. He is thinking of holding the White Cane Day at both the east and west side Walmarts from 10AM to 4PM. Additionally, we're going to have boxes at the locations for people to bring their used eyeglasses. Lion Dean said he would contact Holly Geaman at WLIO to go on her show to tell people about it. Last year we did quite well for the first time out.

Lion Phil addressed issues with the Membership Committee. All Lions are encouraged to get their list of five potential members in. We talked about sending the proposed members letters of invitation, along with a brochure that Lion Fred designed in June 2007. All members are welcomed to contact the Lima Host Lions board of directors with suggestions on how to enhance membership in the club.

Due to the snowstorm last month, blood testing at The Andersons has been rescheduled for April 1st, starting at 9AM till 1PM. Any Lions wishing to help will be welcomed. Special thanks to Lion Tom Keller for allowing us to use The Andersons for the testing. In the past we have helped many people!

The District Convention will be held at The Findlay Inn, located at 200 E Main Cross Street, Findlay, OH 45840. It's the same location as Lion Larry had the convention last year. This year the convention theme is to honor veterans of the wars, and they are seeking donations of "care packages" which will be sent to military personnel overseas. There are a lot of good seminars at the convention, including Officer Training, finance tax issues, Ohio Lions Eye Research, and the Quest programs. It's worthwhile, and your option on which days to attend.

Lion Larry also told us the news of Cliff Parlette's passing. Clifford A. Parlett, 87, of Uniopolis, died Friday, Feb. 29, 2008. Cliff was retired from Clark Equipment where he had been a maintenance foreman. He had been the first police chief in Uniopolis, and also had served as assistant fire chief and a councilman for 30 years and had received recognition for his dedicated service. He also was a trustee of the Uniopolis Historical Society. He was a member of the Starlight Club, United Auto Workers Local 106, the American Legion and Brandt’s Fishing Club. He served with the U. S. Army Company H 185th Infantry 40th Division during World War II.

50/50 DRAWING - Like the loan shark on the corner of Spring and Elm, Lion Fred was taking tickets for the 50/50 drawing. Lion Dave drew the ticket, and Lion Larry took home $10.00 (until Carol finds it). Don't forget, the next drawing, on March 26th, it will be the Quarterly Drawing. PROGRAM

Lion Larry was our program today, talking about the club, district, state, and Lions International. Locally, two of our Lions have brought in two new members, Corinne and Julie. We welcome both these young ladies to our meetings. Thanks to Lion Dean and Lion Lynda for locating some new Lions to spread Lionism in our community.

Lion Larry also spoke about the Lion's Mentoring Program and the need for educating new members on what we do, and our mission to the community. Obviously, Lions do a lot with sight research, but we also do so much more by collecting glasses, collecting money for research, assisting with guide dogs, not to mention the Eye Bank, Starlight Club, and so much more. The Lions Club is so important, and non-commercial, that we are the only service club allowed to operate in communist China. No other service club can say that they can cross boarders by serving mankind.

Lions are 1.3 million men and women in 202 countries and geographic areas conduct vision and health screenings, build parks, support eye hospitals, award scholarships, assist youth, provide help in time of disaster and much more.

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has received the largest donation in its 40-year history, a US$4 million donation from Moorfields Eye Hospital Foundation Trust.

Lions brought an Iraqi girl to Wisconsin to give her the gift of sight. Lions are fighting hunger in South Africa. Lions have a long-standing commitment to the awareness of diabetes that dates back to 1984. Since then, Lions International has adopted a long-term promise to increase awareness of the disease, especially since diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in the U.S. An overwhelming 7 percent, or 20.8 million, of adults and children in the United States have diabetes.

The Northwest Ohio Eyecare Center approved surgeries for people in our area, using the money that we raise. The gift of sight is so very important, and Lions are instrumental in help people. We serve!

BUSINESS

There was much discussion about membership and projects. We need all Lions to give us names of five people who can be contacted about membership.

The Zone 7 Sight Committee is working with Dr. Cheney’s office to get faster resolution of approved clients for exams and glasses. Hope to have better percentage of those approved take advantage of the eye care.

The 50/50 drawing will be held the last meeting of each quarter, (March, June, September, December). Must be present to win. If not present the Lions name who is drawn will still win $10.00. The amount in the jackpot will be accumulated until someone is present to win.

There being no business of record, the meeting was adjourned after discussion of the usual membership and other informational business and fellowship.

Some sad news to report. Cliff Parlette of the Starlight Club slipped on the ice and is in the hospital, and not doing so well. Please keep him in your prayers. Cliff is the fellow who built the box we store our flags in, and made many of the toys and gifts for the Starlight Club's Christmas Party.

March 8th will be blood testing at The Andersons, and we'll have two shifts from 9A-11A and 11A-1P.

District Convention will be at the Findlay Convention Center, April 4th. (Same location as last year). They are holding a reverse raffle with tickets at $20.00. See PDG Larry for one. The way that the reverse raffle works is that the draw tickets until the last ticket is drawn, which is the winner.

Program

Lion Phil introduced Julie Norburg and Kathy Faulette from the Juvenile Court of Allen County. Judge Derryberry is presently the presiding judge, and takes care of probate matters, as well as nearly 1,500 cases of kids getting into trouble. The court has four officers, dealing with kids that are involved in drugs, drinking, and other illegal activities. The mission of the court is to rehabilitate juveniles and keep them out of trouble, and most of all, out of the court system.

In Brisbane, Austrailia, the Lions Song is sung to the tune of "La Marseillaise", the French anthem. It goes like this.

"We are the pride of Brisbane town, We wear maroon, blue and gold. We will always fight for victory, Like Fitzroy, and Bears of old. All for one, and one for all, We will answer to the call. Go Lions, Brisbane Lions, We'll kick the winning score. You'll hear our mighty roar."


The Mount Pleasant Lions Club, of Mount Pleasant, Michigan, have their song that they sing at the end of the meeting. Sung to "Til We Meet Again", it goes like this.

"Smile true Lions, while we sing adieu. Smile and sing with hearts so very true, And be loyal through and through, Boost your club what e'er you do, The songs we sing, the smiles we ever wear, Makes the sunshine brighter everywhere, Send Lionsim through the air, 'Til we meet again, Let's Go."


The Seal Beach Lions Club of Seal Beach, California had this song.

Probably the shortest Lions Song I have found belongs to the Bethel Lions Club, located in Bethel, Alaska. Their song goes;

"Hail, Hail, the Lions are here! Can't you hear them roaring? Can't you hear them roaring? Hail, Hail, the Lions are here! Can't you hear them roaring now!! (Meow!)


Closer to how we sing it is the Massabesic Lions Club of Waterboro, Maine. They sing;

"Oh don’t you hear those Lions roar, Don’t you hear those Lions roar, You can hear them every week as they feed and growl for more, Rah, Rah, Rah. Don’t you hear those Lions roar, their snarling rumbling roar, So roar Lions, bite em, bite em, bite em, Don’t you hear those Lions, Hear those Lion, Hear those Lions Roar. GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!


In District 1A, the birthplace of Lions, they are pretty close to what we sing, but with a slight variation.

"Don't you hear those Lions roar? Don't you hear those Lions roar? You can hear them roaring ev'ry week, As they feed and growl for more. (Rah! Rah! Rah!) You should hear those Lions roar, Their snarling, rumbling roar, - So, roar, Lions! Bite 'em! Bite 'em! Bite 'em! Don't you hear those Lions, hear those Lions, Hear those Lions roar!"


I spent about four hours of researching this, and found no less than eighteen different club songs. No doubt if I looked more, I could find another eighteen. So what do you think, Lima Host Lions? What should be our "official lyrics". Perhaps we should discuss this?

In closing, one of the things that I found interesting was many clubs opened their meeting with a short toast. It goes like this. "Not above you, Not beneath you, But with you."

PDG Larry reminded the members that The Jefferson Awards are coming up, and we're looking for people who should be nominated. Do you know someone who has performed Public Service, helped others, or whom has been active in the community. PDG Larry inducted Lion Corinne Piper into the club. At the present time there are 46,000 Lions Clubs in the world, with 13 of those being sponsored by the Lima Host Lions Club. Welcome, Corinne to the club. We look forward to seeing you at the meeting.

Lion Phil filled us in on The Starlight Club. Marge Briggs has been elected President of the club, so look forward to some dandy jokes and good leadership in the coming year. Annette Cotterman is VP.

We had a few winners in the den. A few, you ask? You betchum. For the $10 50/50, our program chair for the month won it, Lion Dean. The next end of the month drawing was for $40.00. It was won by Lucky Lion Lynda. We understand that most of that will go for Dachshund food. Finally, donated by Lion Linda was a lovely roll around cooler. That was won by PDG Larry! By the way, Lion Fred was filling in for Lion Jim who was a little under the weather. Get better, Jim. The back table needs your pitching arm.

Program

Lion Phil, program chair for February, introduced Marie Von Der Embse, Attorney at Law who is running for Judge in Allen County. There are several candidates in the pack looking to get the position of Judge of the Juvenile and Probate courts

On the Republican side, Deb Drexler, currently an Allen County Common Pleas Court magistrate, is running against Tammie Hursh, currently assistant municipal prosecutor and assistant city law director, previously served as a Juvenile Court magistrate.

On the Democratic side, Judge Glenn Derryberry will seek to hold on to his position as he is being challenged by Marie Von Der Embse for the robe and gavel. The primary is March 4th. Please !

Marie said that she could, and would be a tough judge. Along with a 25 year law career, being a Lima 1st Ward Councilwoman, teacher, and Peace Corp Volunteer, she brings experience to the bench.

He focus will be on families, and especially the children and elderly in the region, whom are often abused and neglected. Marie also explained a lot about what judges do and don't do in the court of the Juvenile and Probate courts. It was an interesting and enlightening talk. Thanks Phil and Marie!

Program

Lion Dean, our resident wisecracking Wisconian, introduced Mary Ellen Good, RN, CNS, from the Community Diabetes Center.

Mary Ellen talked to us about diabetes and the impact in our county. To put it in perspective, by the end of the day, 55 people will have lost their sight as the result of diabetes. This is preventable, since it means that people need to watch their sugar levels, and get regular screenings. If your sugar level is out of wack, it can be corrected. But if you loose your sight, there is no going back to correct it.

Manage your A1C (blood glucose), Blood pressure, and Cholesterol. You will lower your chances of having a heart attack, a stroke, or other diabetes problems. A1C: 7 or less (A1C shows how your blood glucose has been over the last two to three months.) Blood pressure: 130/80 or less. Cholesterol: LDL 100 or less. Above all, don't wait till the symptoms show up to start the process of managing diabetes.
