January 27th 2010 Meeting

We sang Happy Birthday to Lions Tom Lucente, and Jim Schenk. Ironic as it may be, Lion June Miller was here today with her daughter, and the meal included green beans. I hate to be a conspiratorlist, but what are the chances of this? Lion June shows up and they serve beans. I'm suspicious! Lion June brought in a guest for the meeting, her daughter Melody. Nice to have both ladies in the den today.

Lion Bill Stolly mentioned that The Starlight Club will hold a meeting this Friday at the Eagles, on Robb Avenue. He invited all of us to come. He is still looking for drivers.

PDG Larry reminded us that the District Convention would be this March 19th to the 21st. Contact Lion Larry for details if you would like to attend. It will be at the Holiday Inn French Quarter, in Perrysburg.

King Lion Dean told us about White Cane Day that will be the Saturday (May 8th) before Mother's Day. This year we're doing something different. We will be at the west side Walmart only. Shifts will be the same length, but we will have more shifts (which means we need you!) The west side Walmart has given us better results than the east side, so it was thought to concentrate solely on the west side.

If you need some brochures, please contact Lion Larry. Send these to prospective members you think might want to become members of our club. We're still interested in trying to get new members.

The Zone Meeting will be held February 17th (Ash Wednesday). Lion Paul Nutter from Ohio Northern University will be speaking at the meeting about the Lions QUEST program.

The 50/50 Drawing was held, and the winner of $10.00 was PDG Larry. Accepting for Larry was the lovely Lion Carole Swords who said she would bank it for him.

PROGRAM

Lion Larry spoke about his VOSH trip to Haiti, which turned into a rock and roll experience. He was in Haiti when the earthquake hit. Luckily, he was about 40 miles to the east of the epicenter and didn't experience any damage at his location

Larry was there on behalf of the VOSH program, which is headquartered out of the Pandora Methodist Church. From this location they will process around 2-million pairs of glasses, that ultimately make their way to countries like Haiti, and to people who can't afford to get glasses. This was their 33rd trip.

Larry said to get there it was a 6AM flight to Miami, and then another 3 hour flight from Miami to Haiti aboard a small 6-seat airplane. Once in Haiti it was another several hours to a remote Mission that was built 30 years ago. The mission was built for students, who have classes Monday through Thursday. Larry also mentioned that the average Hatian lives to about age 50 in this poverty struck country.

From this mission they will typically serve about 2,556 people. After the earthquake hit they had to pack up and head back to the U.S. in a convoy, and took a military transport to New York where they transferred to a flight to Ohio. By the way, while on the military transport he saw CBS news anchor Katy Couric, and NBC news anchor Ann Curry. Larry said Ann was nicer.

Respectfully submitted by Lion Tail Twister Fred Vobbe

The good Doctor Lion Bob Curry lead us in a birthday song, and then the Lions Song.

PDG Larry Swords was in the den, back from his VOSH trip to Haiti.

If you have an idea for a good program, or know someone that could put on a program for those of us in the den, please contact Lion Ed and get your name in on the Program Chair list. We need programs up until the 3rd Wednesday in June.

Lion Larry is trying to get in touch with Sally Windle at Lima City Schools to discuss the "Excellence in Choral Music Award" in honor of Lion Jack Blackburn. Hopefully Superintendent Karol Oxley will be in the meeting to discuss the Lion's QUEST program.

Lion Bill Stolly needs drivers for The Starlight Club, and mentioned that they have two new members.

50/50 weekly drawing of $10.00 was won by Lion Julie Ward.
Remember, you can't win unless you come to a meeting and toss your dollar in.

PROGRAM

District Governor Jay Deutschman has been a member of the Portage Lions Club since June of 1980. He has a perfect attendance record and has held every office except treasurer.

He mentioned that his goal is to attend every Lions Club in the district, and try to get information from clubs while sharing what he has learned from others.

He encouraged all Lions to attend the District Convention, which will be held at the French Quarter (Holiday Inn) in Perrysburg, located on SR-20 and I-75. The convention will be held Friday to Sunday, March 19th to the 21st).

Respectfully submitted by Lion Fred Vobbe

Lima Host Lions Club of Lima, Ohio held its regular Board Meeting at Lock Sixteen on January 6, 2010. Motion Passed.

Motion to accept financial report was made by Lion Fred and seconded by Lion Julie. Motion passed.

OLD BUSINESS

Brochures will be made available to club members and also to give to guests at meetings.

Still working to get some sort of musical program with the city schools that will be used as a memorial to Lion Jack Blackburn.

President Dean will try to get someone from the city schools to hear a presentation concerning Lion Quest. We also talked about sending a booklet about Lions Quest to the Superintendent and Assistant at the schools and invite them to the zone meeting in February to hear the program that Lion Paul Nutter will present.

In the continuing effort to get new members, the people who showed interest before will be followed up to see if we can get them to confirm their interest with an application.

NEW BUSINESS

Lion PDG Larry wants to start getting ready for the 90th Charter Party. Several possible locations were discussed and we will have more on this at future meetings.

A short discussion was held concerning a request for help for some people in Van Wert County would had a fire. It was decided that this type of thing, while worthwhile and needed, was not something that we should get involved in.

Many things for fundraisers were discussed. Seemed most of what we came up with involved selling some type of food at Square Fair or like occasions. The idea of Mexican hot dogs was very interesting and we will try to have more info on what permits are needed and the procedure to get a food booth started. The idea of trying it out at Star Spangled Spectular seemed to be well received, as we would be able to give it a trial run at a one-day affair and see how things turn out. Stay tuned. More later.

Next board meeting February 3 at Lock Sixteen at noon.

Motion to adjourn by Fred. Seconded by Julie Meeting adjourned at 1:05

Respectfully submitted, Larry Swords, Secretary/Treasurer
