We sang Happy Birthday to Lion Dave Staley and PDG Larry Swords. And sang Happy Birthday to Lion Ed, for a third meeting! Given enough time I think we could have sang happy birthday to the can of beans in the kitchen. You know, the same can that shows up from time to time.

Lion Jim is in the hospital for hip replacement. We wish him well and hope for his speedy return!

Mike Huffman, and several students from Lima Schools attended the meeting. The students were participating members in the Lion's Peace Poster contest.

The 1st award, and a check for $100, went to Emily Korikian. The 2nd award went to Tatum Wise. And the 3rd award went to Mara Zell. We thank these fine students for their participation in the contest!|
Sight First II was given $5,000 by the club. Just a reminder, these funds are used to assist others, and are the mission of our club. The surgery to help one child is $500, and there are so many children waiting for help. It's a worthwhile part of the Lions Club.

Bill Stolly needs just a few more volunteers to fill some slots for the bell ringing at the Lima Post Office. This will be Saturday, December 6th, same day as the blood sugar testing at The Andersons at the American Mall. It has been confirmed that there will be members of the Lima Senior High School's band playing Christmas songs from 11 to 12 noon. They will then take part in the downtown Lima Christmas Parade. (See the photos at the end).

The Starlight Christmas Party will be on December 10th starting at 5PM. Remember, NO NOON MEETING. The part starts at 5 with dinner served at 6PM. There will be entertainment for the evening, and a visit from Santa. Lions are encouraged to attend.

There was some discussion about going back to meeting every Wednesday, rather than the second and fourth Wednesday as we do now. It was thought that maybe our attendance would increase if we went to two meetings a month rather than every week. That has turned out not to be the case. Lion Lynda would like any comments from members, pro or con on our present meeting schedule. Please contact her via the information in the directory, or speak with her at the next couple of meetings. If we change back to every Wednesday, we would not make the change till July 2009 when we change club officers.

The BIG 50/50 drawing was made this meeting, and just to make it honest we let the kids attending draw the names. Emily drew first for the $10.00 and the winner was Lion Lynda. Taylor drew for the $41.50, and Lion Jack came up with the dough.

PROGRAM

Lion Dean was home sick today, so Lion Julie Ward stepped in and presented Dr. Jeffrey E. Godwin, Internal Medicine, from St. Ritas Medical Center. Dr. Godwin spoke to us about the Sleep Lab.

The first sleep lab opened in 1970 at Stanford University. We often take sleep for granted, but lack of it is often tied to many illnesses. Sleep is connected to the cardiovascular system, and is food for the brain. So not getting enough sleep is starving your system. 39% of American's are not getting 7-9 hours of sleep a night. 74% of those have sleep disorders. And 95% are undiagnosed. Lack of sleep can be linked to, diabetes, stroke, obesity, congenital heart failure, and sexual dysfunction.

Dr. Godwin also spoke about Sleep Apnea. Apnea means "not breathing". Accordingly, sleep apnea refers to not breathing during sleep. Airflow may stop only a few times or up to several hundred times during sleep. Central apnea occurs when the breathing muscles in the diaphragm and chest stop because the brain is not sending a strong message to breathe. It can occur due to neurological disorders in adults or lack of full brain development in infants. Obstructive upper airway apnea results from a lack of airflow through the neck due to a block. It may result from excessive fatty tissue because of obesity, an improper opening of the pharynx, or tumor, or other disease condition. Mixed apnea is a combination of both central and obstructive airway apnea.

We sang Happy Birthday again to Ed Eichler. It was also good to see ex-Lion Joyce Roop back in the den. We sure hope she continues to come to the meetings and joins us!

Flower sale money is still needed. If you have not turned in your funds, please do so. We have collected $2,600 so far.

Since this was Spouse's Day we had two guests in the den. Jay Wright, husband of Queen Lion Lynda, and Dixie Staley, wife of Lion Dave Staley. Welcome guests to the Lima Host Lions den!

Bill Stolly is our chairman for the ringing of the bells at the Lima Post Office on Saturday, December 6th. We will have four shifts, 8-9, 9-10, 10-11, and 11-12. This year we'll do something a little different. Deb Vobbe, wife of Lion Fred, is going to see if we can get some kids from the Lima Senior High School band to play some Christmas songs to build the atmosphere. See Lion Bill to sign up.

By the way, Blood Sugar testing at the Andersons is also the same day, December 6th. We'll need some help at the Andersons Lion Larry and Carol are the chairs for that function.

We are collecting toys for the "Toys for Tots" in Lima. Please bring a toy for a boy and a girl to the November 26th meeting.

Starlight Club: The December 10th meeting will be a joint meeting with the Starlight Club at 5PM, with dinner served at 6PM. There will be NO noon meeting. Santa will be at the meeting to hand out presents to the Starlight members, and we expect to have about 70 members in attendance. There is also plans being made for the "Lima North Arts Magnet - Center Stage" show group to perform for us.

We received thank-you cards from Pilot Dogs, and the Zone 7 Sight Committee for our dontations.

Due to some problems with our lists for prospective new members, we are doing a "Mulligan" and starting over fresh. The club would like each member to submit 3 to 5 names of people whom you think would be good members for the club. Please submit those names to Lion Larry as soon as possible. If you filled out one of the forms in the past, and you remember those names, please send an e-mail to Lion Larry, lcswords@wcoil.com, or send it to Larry at Box 611, Lima 45802, or better yet… bring you names on a sheet of paper to the next meeting. Again, we're starting fresh, so any submissions previously submitted did not reach the membership committee.
We would like to welcome Shannon Bohle to the Lima Host Lions Club.

Shannon was inducted into the club at this meeting. She works at the Lima Public Library.

Seen to the left, Past District Governor Larry Swords presents Shannon with her membership certificate at the November 11th meeting.

We look forward to having you in the den, Shannon! Welcome!!

The massive 50/50 drawing that depleted the nation's treasury, and forced AIG into default was held, and Lion Dean walked out of the meeting with ten dollars!

PROGRAM

David M. Hartzell, from St. Rita’s Medical Center spoke to us. He is a clinical pharmacist at St. Ritas, and has taken over the Diabetes Clinic after the retirement of Mary Ellen. He spoke to us about the six outpatient clinics they have, and thirteen patient's rooms at the medical center.

They are looking for more outreach into the community for screening, so they can detect and treat this disease before it impacts more people in our area. The blood screening that we do each month is a prime example of how we can help, as it has caught people with dangerous levels before they get pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, or any number of diseases caused by diabetes.

October 22nd Meeting
No Birthdays or Anniversaries today.

The Starlight Club went to the Ohio School for the Blind. The school caters to students K to 12, and up to age 22. Some of the participants come from as far away as Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. A textbook for a blind student may cost as much as $20,000. The Ohio School for the Blind is sponsored by the Lions Club. The school graduates as many as 150 students per year.

November 12th will be Spouse's Day. If you don't have a spouse, feel free to bring your significant other. Please let Lion Larry know if you plan to attend.

The Optomist's Club sent us a letter on the Toy Drive, which is Nov. 12th to Dec 12th. We're giving this some thought and will talk with Lion Todd about it.

Mary Shenouda was inducted into the Lima Host Lions Club. Mary works with Dr John Pajka Ophthalmologist, located at 855 W Market St, in Lima. Web site is www.pajkaeyecenter.com. It's great to have someone from the eye field in our club so we can get a better understanding of the needs and the technologies available today. Mary was referred to the Lions by Jennifer Schwartz.

The drawing was held for the 50/50. As the basket was shaken, not stirred, the anticipation was thick in the room. Then the moment of truth, and it turned out to be our Queen Lion Lynda who won $10.00. Invest it wisely!

PROGRAM

The program was the induction of Lion Mary Shenouda. After Lion Larry spoke about the history of the Lions, Mary told us about some of the things that Dr. Pajka has been doing in the eye care field.

Dr. Pajka has led numerous humanitarian surgical eye missions to developing countries, including Nicaragua, El Salvador, Haiti, Uzbekistan, Honduras, Guatemala, Bolivia, and Costa Rica.

He and his teams have donated their time and resources to work with local eye surgeons, providing free cataract surgery and care to people who otherwise would remain sightless.

He has helped in the training of eye surgeons in these countries. In fact, he helped organize the Eye Hospital in Managua,Nicaragua. He has also helped teach visiting eye surgeons from Uzbekistan and Nicaragua.
