Dean kicked around the signup sheet for White Cane Day (May 9th). He is still looking for some help.
The slate of officers for the July 2009-June 2010 year was read. Lion Jack is stepping down from his board of directors position, and also as assistant song leader. He said it was due to health issues.
Our club received a Membership Award from the Lions International.
PDG Larry also reminded us about the Memorial Golf Tourney in Columbus. We can use a few more to help with this District F Lions Project. We could use a couple of Lions on June 3 and a few more on June 6. We need to be there about 10:30 each day. Larry will have parking tickets and you will get sandwich and drink vouchers when you get there, along with entry to the course and transportation to the holes you will be working on. Most all of the top golfers golf in this tournament so you get to see the big names in golf. Ends up being a pretty enjoyable day.
Lion Lynda reminded us that our next Board of Director's meeting is April 1st. No fooling, at Lock 16.
PROGRAM
Program Chairman Corrine Piper introduced Lori Board, who spoke to us about their "Boot Camp" for the Blind. This camp teaches kids how to deal with things in life.
It can be something as simple as cooking, or cleaning, but if you're blind and you have never done it, it's new to you. They get one hour of working with a cane, one hour of cooking, and many other things. Think of it, if you had to measure something, how would you use a measuring cup?
They also have to learn how to deal with a mass transit system, such as the TARTA bus service in Toledo, which is like our bus system in Lima, except on a much larger scale.
The kids also were allowed to go to a movie that had a descriptive service to tell them what was happening, they got to go bowling, and go to Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.
A game that all of them liked to play was "Goal Ball"

No happy birthday singing, but a dime fines was levied against Lion Todd and Lion Barry for their appearance on TV. But then PDG Larry was fined a whole dollar for a bad joke. Larry happily paid the fine saying it was "worth it".
Lion Dean reminded us of White Cane Day, on May 9th. It will be held at both Walmarts. Lion Dean is looking for some help to work a one-hour shift. The east side Walmart has two entrances, so we hope this will help add some donations. If you can help, call Lion Dean to get on the schedule.
We are having a reading of the proposed officers of the club at our next meeting. If you have any suggestions or comments in the matter, please attend the meeting.
Corrine talked about "Once in a Blue Moon", and explained about this program that will be held at Marimor at 2550 Ada Rd, in Lima. We are also looking for some help in transportation for some of the blind people that may want to attend this function. If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
We're starting to get organized for the Freedom 5K. We will need help the morning of the event, and it will just take a few hours. Visit http://www.freedom5k.com for more information on the race.
PDG Larry informed us that the area has just chartered a new Lions Club. We would like to welcome the all new Anthony Wayne Lions Club.
PDG Larry also reported that we conducted blood testing at The Andersons, and had seventy-four people come to us. Of the seventy-four, there were two that tested positive for diabetes.
We took a vote on changing the constitution, and the vote passed with no neys.
Lion Lynda is looking for member lists. Please see the end of this newsletter for more information.
Finally, we acknowledged a milestone. Lion Jack Blackburn has been in the club since 1962!
Programs
Joyce Roberts, and Dan Zink from the Logan County Educational Services spoke to us about their services to the blind. One service is their cane program for the blind. A typical cane costs about $20, while a graphite cane costs $40-$60. A small child's cane may be only 2-foot long. But many of the blind people need canes. Our club has donated to their fund so they might buy canes for people that can't afford them. They have served over 133 students this year with canes.
